Get to Know the Builder Behind Sycamore Road Homes
I have had a passion for home architecture and construction methods since my early childhood. Although, I am a first-generation home builder, my father was a talented hobby woodworker. I grew up watching craftsman like Roy Underhill and Norm Abram with him on the weekend; and standing by his side in the shop as he built small furniture pieces and crafts for family. Eventually graduating to working on projects with him. I became obsessed with shows like This Old House and Hometime. While other kids watched cartoons on Saturday morning, I was watching Dean Johnson teach me how to properly plumb a bathroom vanity. The explosion of YouTube content has only made my obsession more solidified, as I am still watching many other homebuilders and trade professionals on a daily basis; always wanting to learn more and better myself as a builder.
I attended Kansas State University from 1998-2003. I started my Freshman Year in Architecture but discovered that was not what I really wanted to do. I learned of a major called Construction Science & Management. I made the switch starting my sophomore year & never looked back. This was the perfect fit for my lifelong passion of construction. And as a licensed builder, I continue my education every year with new classes and seminars.
I started off my career working for some of the largest commercial contractors in the nation; from California to here in Kansas City. When the Great Recession hit, I had to make a choice: give residential construction a shot or completely change course.
So, I spent the next 15 years working my way up in the luxury new home construction world. I went from an estimator to Chief Operating Officer. Running the day-to-day operations for a number of years for a Kansas City Local home builder; I absorbed all the knowledge I possibly could. The owner of that firm and I knew there was an end date; where I would eventually split off and create my own company. That process started in early 2024, which brings us to the creation of Sycamore Road Homes.
Over the last 15 years of new home construction; I have helped design and build so many different home styles: Tuscan, Cape Cod, French Country, Contemporary, Soft Modern, Modern, Traditional, Modern Farmhouse; and the list goes on and on. I love so many assorted styles of architecture and I started Sycamore Road Homes to bring my flair in home design to the Kansas City market. I want my clients to move into their homes, knowing that I have spent countless hours focusing on every detail. The details no one sees and the details that bring stunning material choices to life! I use the best materials both structurally and aesthetically. I bring the ideal of Best Build Practices to the forefront on all our homes. And I love researching new innovative products that I can incorporate into the future of our company.
I have set up Sycamore Road Homes to be able to build just enough model homes to showcase our standard, so that I can maintain my main focus on our clients. I specialize in semi-custom homes for clients and full one-off custom homes. I have relationships with several talented architects, draftspersons and engineers. All of whom excel at creativity and teamwork.
My team and I are always keeping our eyes open and ears to the ground on new developments that would best fit our product. We meet often to review options and schedule meetings with prospective developers. We then discuss amongst ourselves and with the developers, what size and style of homes are in demand in those locations. It is a collaborative effort and we cherish our relationships with the Real Estate Community.
Real Estate Agents for future homeowners also reach out directly to us to pre-interview us for their client. We love working with both repeat agents and new agents!
We also work hard to get our name out to private land homeowners, who are looking for an honorable, reliable and quality home builder to partner with. One of my biggest passions is to build on our client’s private acreage.
The single most important thing is the listen to my clients. Hear what they need, what they want and also what they want to spend.
Next is being honest with them. If all of their wants and needs are under their budget, then we make sure to happily present them the lower cost. We never input inflated costs just to say we hit their budget, when we can provide what they are expecting for a lower, more realistic cost. Along with the honesty, is also being honest when their wants and needs exceed their budget. Sometimes we can value engineer their home to meet their budget while making them happy and excited. Other times we just gain a new friend and let them know that we will be here, just as excited, to build for them if circumstances change for them.
Here is what we DON’T do; act deceitful, bait and switch them at contract, be disrespectful, waste their time, lowball allowances just to get a contract. We also do not enter into a contract at or above the budget that our clients told us they needed to stay under.
My main goal is to become known as one of the most reputable and quality Home Builders in the Greater Kansas City Metro. We will never be the cheapest option, but we will always provide the best construction practices and best client relations as we can.
In 10 years, I would love to see Sycamore Road Homes yard signs in every Estate Development Phase and our signs spread across the rural extents of our great city. And I want my name and my company to be synonymous with words like; Honest, Fair, Integrity, Reputable, Reliable, Craftsmanship, Quality, Kind and the like. I want all my clients to know that they picked the perfect builder for their home.
